BIOGRAPHY

Around 15 years ago, an extraordinary musical experience during a “voyage of inspiration” to Bulgaria became a pivotal moment for saxophone player Michael Blicher, leading him to focus on universal soul music.

A chance encounter with four women singing traditional Bulgarian folksongs, accompanied by an elderly man playing a goatskin-bagpipe, deeply moved Blicher. He felt a profound connection between this Bulgarian folk music and the folkloric music of Mississippi, Mali, Cuba, and New Orleans, which had similarly touched him in the past.

Since then, Blicher has refined his interpretation of this “musical feeling,” which he sees as universal, transcending borders and cultures. This exploration is evident in the albums released by his bands Astro Buddha Agogo, Blicher Hemmer Gadd, Radiostar, and Sunbörn (The KutiMangoes) and Aegteskab.

In the past 15 years, Blicher has worked with Hammond organ player Dan Hemmer, renowned for his exceptional ability to make both the music and his fellow band members shine. Through an event organized by JazzDanmark, Blicher had the chance to meet and perform with drummer Steve Gadd, who immediately shared Blicher’s passion for soulful music. Gadd soon joined Blicher and Hemmer on  a European tour. Blicher Hemmer Gadd is very much a con-amore-project for this legend, who´s schedule mainly includes shows with James Taylor, Paul Simon and Eric Clapton.

Blicher has toured globally with his 6-piece AfroBeat band, The Sunbörn, and with Blicher Hemmer Gadd. His bands have won five Danish Music Awards and received 12 nominations.
